The Militia Act of 28 May 1858 gave government approval to accept volunteer corps to maintain peace within New Zealand.

The Auckland Rifle Volunteers were the first colonial force to be marched to the front in the Waikato Wars on 9 July 1863. On 29 December 1879 they were absorbed into the Auckland Rifle Battalion.
