The Ekatahuna Mounted Rifles were accepted as a Volunteer Corps on 10 September 1900, but not before some men had already left to serve in the South African War.

Dress uniforms were provided in 1904, and their colour was presented in 1907 by the Governor, Lord Plunket, on New Zealand’s first Dominion Day.
