The Royal Horse Artillery's first action in the Crimean War was at Bulganak where they covered the withdrawal of the Light Brigade. Then at the Alma they commenced the attack and continued to support the advance of the Light Division and the Highland Brigade, and later with the Royal (Foot) Artillery fired into the retreating Russians.
At Balaclava they attempted to halt the Russian advance on the Turkish - held redoubts but were forced to withdraw being out-gunned. Following the charge of the Heavy Brigade this same artillery troop galloped forward and fired into the Russian cavalry preventing them from reforming.
