Early on the day of the Battle of Balaclava, four battalions of the Dnieper Regiment of the Line were part of the Russian army columns that attacked and successfully took three of the British guns from these redoubts on the Causeway Heights overlooking the North South Valleys.

Lord Raglan, in an attempt to prevent the Russians removing the British guns from these redoubts issued orders, which were misunderstood, leading to the ill-fated charge of the Light Brigade.

This set depicts the 23rd (Ukraine) Regiment with flat hats (furashka) and greatcoats (shinel) with the skirts tucked inwards and buttoned up. The design of their colour (flag) appears to have been unique to the Russian Army at the time.
