Drawn from the Army of the Caucasus, Cossacks were at this time considered the best light cavalry in the world, being skilled at scouting, raiding, ambushing and outpost duty. Though widely used in the Crimea, their skills were given no chance by the Russian Commander-in-Chief General Menshikov not knowing how to use them.

At Balaclava the 53rd Don Cossacks took part in the successful Russian attacks on the Causeway Heights redoubts, while other Cossack regiments met the charges of the Heavy and Light Brigades.
