In 1883 the Ballarat Rangers became the 3rd Battalion of the Victorian Infantry Brigade. In 1899 the battalion numbered 450 men. On being passed into the ranks, they had to attend their regular parades for five years.

After the Federation of the Australian States in 1901, the Regiment became the 7th Australian Infantry.
