Before dawn on the morning of 5 November, 1854, a major Russian force attacked from Sevastapol. Through the mist and fog came 35,000 men and 134 guns, with heavy support, against the French and British on the Inkerman ridge. Realising his forces were outgunned and outranged, Lord Raglan ordered up two 18 pounder guns from the siege train. With no horses available, the guns were hauled over the one and a half miles by 150 men with drag ropes, to their positions on Home Ridge. From there they drove off the Russian batteries and a large infantry column and after a day’s intense battle contributed to the Russian army retiring back to Sevastapol.
