Major General George A. Custer was one of the Union Army’s most daring and flamboyant cavalry commanders during the Civil War. Rising with remarkable speed—from West Point graduate in 1861 to brigadier general of volunteers by age 23—he earned a reputation for fearless, often aggressive leadership.

Known for his striking appearance, including long hair and bright, personalized uniforms, Custer led cavalry brigades in key campaigns such as Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, and Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley operations. By war’s end he was a brevet major general, celebrated for his audacity, rapid strikes, and relentless pursuit of Confederate forces, especially during the final push to Appomattox.

After the war, Custer continued his military career on the western frontier, where his leadership—and impulsiveness—became defining traits. His legacy remains mixed: admired for personal bravery and rapid maneuvering, yet criticized for rash decisions, most famously leading to his defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.
