The ‘Texas Brigade’ under the command of General John Bell Hood was composed of 1st, 4th, 5th Texas Infantry regiments, and the 3rd Arkansas.

In the early days of the war the 1st Texas carried the Lone Star flag which was made from the wedding dress of Mrs. Wigfall, the wife of the regiment’s colonel. By the time of the of Battle of Gettysburg all state flags had been forbidden and replaced with the Army of Northern Virginia battle flag, known today as the Confederate flag. However, on July 2nd 1863 at Gettysburg this Lone Star State flag was unfurled as the brigade went into the fight for Devil’s Den, an action described by General James Longstreet as “the best three hours fighting ever done by any troops on the battlefield.”

This success for the Texans was lost as the battle went against Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army.
